Medieval Christian Angelology:
A Political Philosophical Approach through the Llibre dels àngels by Francesc Eiximenis

Angels permeate the entire medieval Christian West. They are a constant, daily presence in the lives of human beings and, at the same time, they have been the object of profound theological, philosophical and political reflections. Thinkers from different backgrounds have sought through his study answers about the political reality of their time. On this occasion I will address the topic in question through Francesc Eiximenis (c. 1330-1409), a Franciscan born in Gerona who had a notable performance in various settings. In relation to the subject of our interest, he wrote the Llibre dels àngels, a treatise on angelology that includes reflections of a political nature. From this work I will work especially on book IV, which is basically about demons, and book V, dedicated to the archangel Michael and his fight against the fallen angels.
