On the Didactic Potential of Lyric Poetry.
Teaching Metaphor and Argumentation on the Basis of a Canonical Sonnet

In this work, it is developed a concrete proposal to teach a canonical sonnet by Luis de Góngora to Spanish-speaking high school students. Here, lyrical poetry is not conceived as a merely complementary activity to language teaching, but as a platform with a formidable didactic potential. In this sense, the detailed study of a lyric poem can allow the understanding of three fundamental issues: (i) what a metaphor is and what can it mean; (ii) how an argumentative text is organized and how it works; (iii) why certain complex texts (like this one by Gongora) are highly valued. It is also suggested that a didactic development such as the one displayed here is necessary for adolescents to move from the stage of compulsive reading (difficult and painful) to that of pleasant reading (difficult but enjoyable).
