Abstract

Pierre Abelard suggests that linguistic expressions (modus significandi) refer to things in the world (modus essendi), not directly, but through the confusing universal images of thought (modus intelligendi). In terms of a neurocognitive reinterpretation, the modus significandi corresponds to the lexical nodes, and the modus intelligendi to the conceptual nodes, while the modus essendi corresponds to the plane of reference. Thus, the reviled Middle Ages have prefigured the characterization of the linguistic system in terms of relational networks theory, whose hypotheses have neurological plausibility because they are compatible with what is known about the brain thanks to neuroscience.
