The celebration of the 800th anniversary of the composition of the Canticle of the Creatures by St. Francis of Assisi has opened new perspectives for interpreting one of the most significant texts for Christian ecological spirituality. From the perspective of spiritual theology, this reflection accompanies each creature in its harmony with the Creator. The saint of Assisi called every creature brother and sister, recovering the image imprinted in them by God. At the same time, he situates humanity within the spiritual horizon of illness, forgiveness, and death, realities to be embraced in the likeness of Christ, through whom all things were created. Thus, the Canticle—whose musical score has not been preserved—reveals the mystery of God in the cosmos and frees it from the narrow framework of history.
